How to Run With the Football

Knowing how to properly hold and run with a football helps the team maintain possession of the ball even when you get tackled. This means everything when it comes to scoring a touchdown and winning the game.
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Take the football into your hands and place the ball in a breadbasket hold, which involves resting the football on your forearm while the other forearm goes over the top of the ball and envelopes the ball into your body. This creates the ultimate protection of the ball when you run through a group of defensive players.

  2. Step 2

Move the football to the crook of your arm, nose of the football against your arm pit, as you start to run away from the players full speed ahead to the end zone. Keep the ball against your body.

  3. Step 3

Check the validity of each football hold by having your friends or teammates try to knock or pull the football out of your hands. Remember to keep the ball near your body at all times.

  4. Step 4

Practice each football hold while running with the ball until it's second nature to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your whole body protects the ball in a breadbasket hold. Even if you fall or get tackled, the ball stays with you.
  • Make sure when you run with the ball, you never hold it away from your body while in your forearm. Keep the ball near your body to protect it. Otherwise the ball gets pulled or knocked away from your arm by a defender who came up behind you or in front of you.
